Acting for Deaf BSL Users
A part - time, three term introduction to acting for TV and theatre 

 

Overview

Course Director: Darren Cheek
Course Length: 1 Year, Part -Time
Times: The course is over seven hours a week:

  • Wednesday, 7pm - 9pm:Movement
  • Thursday, 7pm - 9pm: Acting for Screen
  • Saturday, 10am - 1pm: Acting

Application: Applications made through ALRA. Entry to course through audition

 

Course Content
This course will help you prepare physically and mentally for full-time training at drama school.  It will give you an understanding of the work involved in full time training and help you to prepare to apply and audition for full-time acting courses.

Acting for Deaf BSL Users covers the basics of acting, acting for screen and movement.

 

Course Structure
The course will run over three terms and includes units in:

  • An introduction to Acting
  • An introduction to Acting for Screen
  • An introduction to Movement
  • An understanding of the professional world of acting
  • An understanding of work and life at drama school
  • Preparation for audition and entry onto full-time vocational actor training courses

 

Term 1

  • Acting: you build an ensemble using exercises, games and improvisation. You will learn how to play simple scenes and how to make characters.
  • Acting for Screen: you will be taught through simple improvisations to work to camera.
  • Movement: you will learn the basics and look at mime techniques.

Term 2

  • Acting: you will be helped by a director to choose and work on audition pieces; this leads to an in-house performance.
  • Acting for Screen: you will concentrate on short improvised scenes and then move to written script.
  • Movement: you will explore the elements (earth, wind, fire, water) and apply this to your work. You will also study mime to a deeper level.

Term 3

  • Acting: you will work on scenes which are performed in the ALRA Theatre.
  • Acting for Screen: you will work on longer and more difficult scenes which will be recorded.
  • Movement: you will concentrate on animal studies. There will be a small movement performance at the end of the term.

 

Other Activities

  • Stand-Up Night: This is an annual event organised in house and open to all Acting students
  • Christmas Cabaret: This is an annual event organised in house and open to all students

 

Teaching
You will be taught by practical methods, classes, workshops, exercises, rehearsals and informal presentations.
 
There will also be group discussions, seminars and lectures, as well as tutor feedback.

All tutors and directors who teach on the course are professional actors and directors and come from both the deaf and hearing world.

 

Qualifications
When you complete the course you will receive the ALRA First Stage Acting Certificate.

 

Progression            
When you gain a place on this course you are given a free audition for ALRA’s full - time BA (Hons) Acting or MA Professional Acting starting in the following year.
