Playing with Shakespeare
A course for those who teach Shakespeare from KS3 to A Level

Discover new ways of introducing and developing your students understanding of the Bards texts as pieces of theatre, rather than as “literary” texts. Take Shakespeare off the shelf and out of the museum. Encourage your students to have fun and make their own discoveries about how the plays work, and how the verse prompts the choices the actor makes.

When?: Wednesday 29th – Friday 31st July 2009 or Monday 24th – Wednesday 26th August 2009 from 9.30am – 6.30pm.

Cost?: £175 per person

How?

These goals will be achieved through using a variety of techniques commonly used by directors and actors. This course will encourage you to look again, and rediscover your own understanding of why Shakespeare still has something to say four centuries on. All that is required is an open mind, and your ability to PLAY just for the sake of playing.

What?

This will be a practical course, looking first of all at the technical and physical requirements of verse speaking; breaking down text, to focus on meaning, and thought.

You will also look at

  • How character is revealed
  • The games that can be played with the language
  • How to empower the student in to discovering the heart of the scene

At the end of this short course, you will be given a certificate which may be used to validate your learning development professionally, and the course will itself serve as an introduction for further teacher development courses to be offered by ALRA.

When?
